RMS Queen Mary

The construction and naming
With Germany launching their Bremen and Europa in service, the British did not want to be outdone in the race for shipbuilding. White Star Line began construction of their 60,000 tons in 1928 ocean, while under a Cunard ship 75,000 tons unnamed own.
The construction of the vessel, known only as "Hull Number 534", began in December 1930 on the River Clyde in the John Brown & Company Shipbuilding and Engineering shipyard at Clydebank Scotland. Work was halted in December 1931 due to the Great Depression and the Cunard asked the British Government for a loan to complete 534. The loan was granted, with enough money to fill the Queen Mary and build a running mate Hull No. 552 was to become Queen Elizabeth. A condition of the loan was that Cunard would merge with the White Star Line, which is the chief rival Cunard UK the time and had already been forced by the crisis to cancel the construction on its Oceanic. Both lines of agreement and the merger was completed in April 1934. Work on the Queen Mary resumed immediately and she was launched September 26, 1934. Completion finally took three years and cost 3 million pounds in total. Much of the interior of the vessel was designed and built by the Bromsgrove Guild.
The ship was named after Queen Mary, wife of King George V. Until her launch the name she was given was to be kept a closely guarded secret. Legend has it that Cunard for the name of the ship "Victoria" According to the tradition of the company to give his name ending vessels in "ia". However, when company representatives asked the king's permission to name the largest ocean liner after Britain " Queen, "he said to his wife, Queen Mary, would be delighted. And yes, the legend, the delegation of course no other choice but to declare that No. 534 be called RMS Queen Mary. This story was denied by business leaders, and traditionally the names of rulers have been used only for capital ships of the Royal Navy. Some support for the story was provided by the Washington Post editor Felix Morley who sailed as a guest of the Cunard Line on the maiden voyage of 1936, the Queen Mary. In his autobiography, 1979, memo, Morley wrote that was at table with Sir Percy Bates, chairman of the Cunard Line. Bates told him the story of the designation of the ship "provided you do print in my lifetime. "The name of the Queen Mary could also be decided as a compromise between Cunard and White Star Line, Cunard, which recently merged the two rows have a tradition of using names or ending in "ic" with the White Star and "ia" Cunard.
History (1934-1939)
Queen Mary 1936
There was already a Clyde turbine steamer Queen Mary's name, if Cunard White Star reached an agreement with the owners that the existing steamer would be renamed TS Queen Mary II, and in 1934 the new liner was launched by Queen Mary as RMS Queen Mary. On his way down the the slipway, the Queen Mary has been slowed by drag chains eighteen, who checked the progress of the ship in the Clyde, part of which had been expanded to allow the launch.
When she left for her maiden voyage from Southampton, England, May 27, 1936, she was commissioned by Sir Edgar T. Britten who had been appointed captain for Cunard White Star when the ship was under construction at John Brown shipyard. The Queen Mary had a gross tonnage (GT) 80,774 tons, its rival, Normandie, which initially increased 79,280 tons, had been changed the previous winter to increase its size 83,243 GT (a tourist fair closed was built on the deck to the rear area where the playground was), and therefore kept the As the largest cruise ship. The Queen Mary sailed at high speed for most of her maiden voyage to New York until thick fog forced a reduction speed on the last day of the crossing.
The observation lounge bar. The windows were once part of the recovery enclosed promenade deck, the living has been extended forward from 1967.
The design of the Queen Mary has been criticized for being too traditional, especially when the hull of the Normandie was revolutionary with a lawnmower-shaped, streamlined arc. Except for his cruiser back, she seemed to be simply a expanded version of his predecessors Cunard before World War I era. Its interior decoration, while most Art Deco, still seemed sober and cautious over the line ultra-modern French. However, the Queen Mary has proved to be the most popular vessel as its big rival, in terms passengers carried.
In August 1936, Queen Mary captured the Blue Riband of Normandy, with an average speed of 30.14 knots (55.82 km / h) to the west and 30.63 knots eastbound. Normandy has been renovated with a new set of propellers in 1937 and restored the honor but in 1938 the Queen Mary has taken the Blue Riband in both directions at an average speed of 30.99 knots (57.39 km / h) westbound and 31.69 knots eastbound records which stood until losing against the SS United States in 1952.

Also on board was a lawyer Observation Bar, an art deco lounge, overlooking the ocean.
Woods of different regions of the British Empire have been used in her apartment in public booths. Accommodation ranged from fully equipped, luxurious first-class cabins and modest narrower third-class cabins. Artists commissioned by Cunard in 1933 for works of art inside include Edward Wadsworth and A. Duncan Carse.
WWII
Arriving in New York Harbor, June 20, 1945, with thousands of American soldiers.
In late August 1939, the Queen Mary has been on a rebound in New York to Southampton. The international situation led to her being escorted by the cruiser HMS Hood. She arrived safely, and depart for New York on September 1st. When she arrived, the Second World War had begun and was sentenced to remain in port until new order along the Normandy. In 1940, the Queen Mary and Normandy have been joined in New York by Queen Mary's new Queen Elizabeth's running mate, fresh from his table Clydebank secret board. The three largest ships in the world at rest for a while until the Allied commanders decided that the three ships could be used as troop transports (unfortunately, Normandy is destroyed by fire during the conversion of troops). The Queen Mary has left New York to Sydney, where she, along with several other liners, was converted into a troop transport to carry troops from Australia and New Zealand the United Kingdom. In the conversion, its hull, superstructure and funnels were painted gray navy. Inside, the furniture and decoration booths have been removed and replaced by three levels stacked wood (which was later replaced by standee bunks). Six miles of carpet, 220 cases china, crystal and silverware, tapestries and paintings were removed and stored in warehouses for the duration of the war. The woodwork in the cabin, the dining room first class and other public places have been covered with leather. Finally, have joined forces to service by Queen Elizabeth, the two vessels were the largest and fastest troops involved in war, often carrying as many as 15,000 men in one trip, and often moving out of a column and without escort. Their high speed meant that it was difficult for boats to catch U.
On October 2, 1942, Queen Mary accidentally sank one its leaders, splitting the light cruiser Curacao off the coast of Ireland, with the loss of 338 lives. Because of the constant threat of being attacked by submarines, aboard the Queen Mary Captain C. Gordon Illingworth was under strict orders not to stop for any reason, the Royal Navy destroyers Accompanying the Queen has ordered to stay focused and not to rescue survivors.
The front of the Queen Mary was equipped with powerful new windows and anti-aircraft guns seen here in Long Beach.
By December 1942, the Queen Mary wore 16,082 U.S. soldiers from New York to Great Britain, a permanent record for passengers ever transported on a ship. While 700 miles from Scotland during a storm, she was suddenly struck hit by a rogue wave that may have reached a height of 28 meters (92 feet). An account of this crossing is in the book by Walter Ford Carter, no greater sacrifice, no greater love. Carter, his father, Dr. Norval Carter, part of the 110th Station Hospital on board at the time, wrote that at one point the Queen Mary "damned near capsized … One moment the top deck is at its usual height and then swoom! Down, above and before they land. "It has been calculated after the ship tilted 52 degrees and would have capsized if it had rolled another 3 degree. The incident inspired Paul Gallico to write his story, The Poseidon Adventure, which was later made into a film of the same name, using Queen Mary as a stand-in for the SS Poseidon.
During the war, the Queen Mary carried Prime Minister Winston Churchill across the Atlantic for meetings with representatives of Allied colleagues on several occasions, he would be listed on the passenger manifest as "Colonel Warden" and insisted that the lifeboat entrusted to be fitted with a .303 machine gun so that he could "resist capture at all costs ".
After the Second World War
The Queen Mary in Southampton, June 1956
From September 1946 to July 1947, Queen Mary has been redeveloped for passenger service, adding air conditioning and upgrading the configuration to 711 beds first class, the class of the cabin 707 and 577 passengers in tourist class. Following the refit, the Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth dominated the transatlantic passenger trade, as Cunard White Star both vessels week express service by the second half of the 1940s into the 1950s. They have proved highly profitable for Cunard. But 1958 the first transatlantic flight by a jet start a totally new era of competition for the Cunard Queens. On some trips, especially in winter, The Queen Mary sailed into the port with more crew than passengers. (But she and her sister Queen Elizabeth still averaged more than 1,000 passengers passage in the mid 1960s.) In 1965, the entire Cunard fleet was leaving a trail of red ink. Hoping to continue finance the remaining construction Queen Elizabeth 2, Cunard mortgaged most of the fleet. Finally, under a combination of age, the lack of interest Public inefficiency in a new market and deteriorating effects of the strike after the National Seamen, Cunard announced that the both the Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth will be removed from service (service leave Elizabeth a year later) and had to be sold. Many offers were made, but it was Long Beach, Calif., who defeated the Japanese scrap. Thus, the Queen Mary was retired in 1967, while his running mate the Queen Elizabeth was retired in 1968. RMS Queen Elizabeth 2 has had on the transatlantic route in 1969.
The Queen Mary in Long Beach
The Queen Mary on the north side Port of Long Beach
After his retirement in 1967, she steamed to Long Beach, California, where it is permanently moored as a tourist attraction. From 1983 to 1993, the Queen Mary was accompanied by Howard Hughes' Spruce Goose, which was located in a large dome nearby (the dome is now used by Carnival Cruise Lines as a ship terminal, and previously as a soundstage).
Since drilling for oil began in Long Harbor Beach, part of the revenue had been set aside in the Fund "Tidelands Oil." Some of those funds were allocated in 1958 for the future purchase of a maritime museum in Long Beach.
Conversion
When the Queen Mary was purchased by Long Beach, they decided that the ship would not host iconic for its preservation as a liner. It was decided to allow almost all areas of the ship under the bridge C (called A bridge from 1950 to reduce confusion for passengers of all the restaurants were in "R" deck) to make room for the museum. This would increase museum space to 400,000 square feet. It took the removal of all parts of the boiler, the engine room forward both Houses of turbo, the stabilizers of the ship and water softening plants. Now the ship is empty fuel tanks then filled with mud room which would keep the ship center of gravity and the project at the correct level, since these factors were critical affected by the removal of all the different components and structure. Only the engine room aft and "tree driveway" in the stern of the ship, would be spared from the torch of the cutter. The remaining space will be used for storage or office space. Any problems that arise conversion has been a dispute between the land and maritime unions on employment conversion. The U.S. Coast Guard had the last word Queen Mary has been seen as a building, since most of its propellers were removed and emptied his machine. The ship also been painted with red paint water level a bit higher than its old one. Upon conversion of the chimneys have been removed as it was The only practical way to get out of scrap material from engine and boiler rooms, subsiquently was found that the chimneys were organized in collaboration with more than thirty layers of paint and they should be replaced by new replicas.
A passage in the first class accommodation, which is now part of the hotel on board
With all the lower decks of nearly emptied from the bridge and R down, Diner's Club, the original tenant of the ship, was to convert the rest of the ship in a hotel. Mary Queen Diner's Club disbanded and joined the ship in 1970, after their parent company, Diner's Club International has been sold, and a change in company management has been mandated the middle of the conversion process. Speciality of the house, a company based in Los Angeles that focuses on the theme of restaurants in operation, will take over as the master tenant of the following year.
During this conversion, the plan was to convert most of its first class cabins and second A and B bridges in hotel rooms, and convert the main lounges and dining rooms in the reception areas. The promenade deck, the starboard promenade deck would be attached to feature a gourmet restaurant and a cafe called Lord Nelson and Lady Hamilton as a theme early 19th century sailing ships. Famous Observation and elegant bar has been redecorated, a theme bar in the West.
The Queen Mary's Bridge, now open to visitors
The small rooms such as first-class public in the lounge, library, conference room and music studio would be stripped of most their couplings and translated at the retail space, strongly expand the retail presence on the boat. Two shopping centers were built over the terrace in separate areas previously used for first-class cabins and engineering terms.
A characteristic post-war ship, the first-class film, was removed from the kitchen to the parks to explore new dining room bridge. The first-class lounge and House have been reconfigured and converted into banquet space, while the second class room smoking would be subdivided into a wedding chapel and office space. The Sun Deck, the elegant conservatory would Grill gutted and transformed into a fast food restaurant, while dining upscale new would be created directly above the bridge on the sport in the space once used for quarters crew. The second class rooms would be extended alongside the ship and used for banquets. On the bridge, R, the dining room of the first class has been reconfigured and divided into two banquet rooms, the Royal Hall and the Windsor Room. The dining room of the second class would be divided into storage kitchen and dining room of the crew, while the dining room of the third class in the first instance be used as storage and crew. Also on deck A, the first class Turkish bath complex, the equivalent of a spa in 1930, would be deleted. The second pool class would be deleted and its space originally used for offices, while the first class swimming pool would be used for guests of the hotel. Combined with modern safety codes, and the structural soundness of the area directly below, the pool is no longer in use.
No cabin crew remain intact on the ship today. She now serves as a hotel, museum, tourist attraction, and the rental site for events, but its financial results have been mixed.
The Queen Mary as a tourist attraction
On May 8, 1971, Queen Mary opened its doors to tourists. Initially only parts of the ship were open to the public as a specialty of the house had not yet opened its eateries or hotels. Consequently, the ship was open only on weekends. In December of that year, the Museum of Jacques Cousteau of the open sea, with only a quarter of exhibitions planned built. In this decade, the Cousteau museum closed because of low ticket sales and death of many fish that have been preserved in the museum. In November the following year, the hotel opened its original 150 guest rooms. Hyatt operated the hotel from 1974 to 1980, when Jack Wrather Corporation has signed a lease for 66 years with the City of Long Beach to use the entire property. Wrather was taken over by the Walt Disney Company in 1988 Wrather owned the Disneyland Hotel, Disney, which had tried to buy it for 30 years, the Queen Mary was well after the fact and never been marketed as the property of Disney.
First Class accommodations on the Queen Mary, converted into a hotel room now with modern curtains, bedding and amenities surrounded by original woodwork, windows and light fixtures.
Thanks to the late and early nineties, the Queen Mary continued to financial difficulties. During the years of Disney, Disney plans to develop a theme park on the remaining land. This theme park has finally opened a decade later to Japan DisneySea, a recreated ship like the Queen Mary as its centerpiece. Hotel Queen Mary closed in 1992, when Disney abandoned the lease on the ship to focus on what would become Disney's California Adventure. Attraction tourism has remained open for two months, but at the end of 1992, the Queen Mary completely closed its doors to tourists and visitors.
In February 1993, under the leadership of President and CEO Joseph F. Prevratil, RMS Foundation, Inc. has begun a five-year lease with the city of Long Beach to act as operators of the property. Later this month, the tourist attraction reopened completely, while the hotel was reopened in March. In 1995, RMS lease has been extended to twenty years, while the extent of the rental was reduced to only the operation of the ship itself. New Society, Queen's Seaport Development, Inc. (QSDI) was established in 1995 to control the real estate side of the ship. In 1998, the City of Long Beach extended the lease to 66 years QSDI. In 2005, QSDI sought Chapter 11 protection because of a dispute over rent with credit to the City. In 2006, the bankruptcy court has requested submissions from parties interesting to take over the lease of QSDI. The minimum bid opening was 41 million. The operation of the ship, by RMS, remained independent of bankruptcy. In summer 2007, a lease, the Queen Mary was sold to a group called Save the Queen "managed by Hostmark Hospitality Group, which planned to develop the land next to the Queen Mary, and improve, renovate, restore and Queen Mary. During their time management, cabins have been updated with iPod docks and a TV flat screen, usually the three chimneys were repainted their original color Red Cunard and the waterline of vessels area, bordered port Promenade Deck has been restored and rehabilitated, and work on other parts of the ship, many rescue boats have been repaired and corrected, and galleys of ships have been renovated with new equipment.
At the end of September 2009, the leadership of Queen Mary's was taken over by the Delaware North Companies, which intend to continue the restoration and renovation of the ship and its property, and work to revitalize and strengthen one of the most luxurious ships of all time.
In 2004, the Queen Mary and Kitty added Stargazer Productions Great American Cabaret in the space previously occupied by the bank of the ship and a room wireless telegraphy. Stargazer Productions and the Queen Mary transformed the space in a working dinner theater with stage, lights, sound, and scullery.
Meeting Queens
On February 23, 2006, the RMS Queen Mary 2 hailed his predecessor as it made its port of call in Los Angeles Harbor on a cruise in Mexico. The event was covered extensively by local and international media.
Ship's horn
The salvation itself was carried out with the Queen Mary blow one's horn air work in response to the Queen Mary 2 blow his trademark combination of two horns pointing forward and a new original 1932 Queen Mary Horn (offered by the City of Long Beach) to the rear. The Queen Mary had three whistles originally set at 55 Hz, a frequency chosen because it was low enough that the extremely loud noise of it would not be painful to the human ear. Modern IMO regulations specify frequency horn vessels to be in the range of 70,200 Hz for vessels over 200 meters (660 feet) long. Traditionally, the frequency is low over the ship. The Queen Mary 2, 345 meters (1130 feet) long, was the lowest possible frequency (70 Hz) for his settlement whistles, and more the whistle renovated 55 Hz to permanent loan. 55 Hz is the lowest low "A" note found one octave above the lowest note of a piano keyboard. The air-driven whistle Typhon can be heard at least ten miles away.
W6RO
Queen Mary's wireless radio
The Queen Mary's original, professionally manned wireless radio was destroyed once the ship arrived in Long Beach. In its place, a room for amateur radio has created a bridge over the radio reception room home with some originals discarded radio equipment used for display purposes only. The amateur radio station with the call sign W6RO ("Whiskey Six Romeo Oscar") relies on volunteers a local amateur radio club. They are present most of the time the ship is open to the public, and radios can also be used by other amateur radio operators.
In honor of his more than forty years of dedication to W6RO and Queen Mary in November 2007, the Queen Mary Wireless was Nate Brightman renamed La Salle Radio Room. This was announced October 28, 2007 at Brightman's party 90th birthday of Joseph Prevratil, President and Chief Executive of Queen Mary.

Ghosts have been reported After board is definitely rooted in California. Many areas are rumored to be haunted. Reports of hearing little children crying in the room kindergarten used as a playroom third class, and a mysterious noise in the start pool drained first class are listed. In 1966, 18-year-old engineer John Pedder was crushed by a watertight door in the engine room during a fire drill, and his ghost is said to haunt the ship. He also said that the spirit of a young girl named Jackie who was assassinated in pool hall haunts the pool of first class on board the ship.
