Using a steamer for cleaning – yay or nay? which brand works (or doesn’t work) for you?

I have considered the Haan one on QVC and the Bissell on HSN but they both have some shady reviews.

Both stations have shown these products working perfectly for cleaning things like appliances, shower doors, outdoor furniture, BBQ grills, etc. These are the things I would like to be able to clean – just like it works on TV!

Suggestions? Your experiences? Both negative and positive are welcome – be sure to name the brands you’ve tried.

Thank you so much!

I bought a Shark steamer that looks like a canister sweeper; the steam generator is on wheels and you have a long hose that the attachments go on. I use it a lot and like it. It does great on the gas grill (what I originally bought it for), the stove, floors, woodwork, walls, strips wallpaper great, bathroom fixtures and cleans windows like nothing else! And the windows stay clean longer because there is no sticky residue for the dirt to stick to.

I’ve also used it to defrost my one big freezer that is not frost free and instead of waiting all day to for the ice to melt, I was totally done and cleaned up in less than an hour! Now I did use my carpet shampoo machine’s upholstery attachment to suck up the water as the ice melted… .

It is essential that you pair a steamer with a microfiber cloth for the best results. I got 24 of them at Sam’s Club for less than $10. and I use them constantly. They wipe/clean better than any paper towel, sponge or dish cloth ever dreamed of! When they get dirty, I just pop them in to washer and dryer and they are ready to use again. I use a lot fewer paper towels which is better for the budget and the environment too!

I really like cleaning with steam over all those nasty chemicals and expensive products that don’t work anyhow. And the steam doesn’t make you cough, sneeze or stink up the place either.

I do think most of the little handheld units are way too small to generate enough steam to do much; that’s why I went with a bigger unit. The Shark with a full tank of water will give you about 45 minutes of cleaning time.

My only complaint is that the brushes that come with it are flimsy and don’t last long. I just bought a set of detail brushes at the hardware store; a soft nylon, a harder nylon and a couple of wire brushes instead. I steam the area and if I need a brush to get in the cracks, I select the right one for the surface and away I go. When the brushes get dirty, I pop them in the dishwasher. And when cleaning my gas grill, I use a brass brush made for grills that is skinny enough to get in those tight places. But the main unit and the floor attachment work great!

Just be sure to follow the directions to a T; these steam appliances can & will burn you if you don’t use them properly.
